Patient Demographics: Children, Adult, Elderly

"The patient needs to feel understood and respected. The medicine should be given just as it improves your life and maintains it for the necessary time. The family is a fundamental part of the care of people with psychiatric problems, so it should be integrated into the consultations and clarify their doubts as well as those of the patients."

General Info

About me

I work in in Geriatric Psychiatry, for the geriatrics service of the National Hospital of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Dr. Raúl Blanco Cervantes. Where I am part of the hospitalization service, external consultation, urgencies, also the Team of Attention of Older Adults Victims of Aggression, Sleep Clinic and Memory Clinic, for the assessment of cognitive impairment and dementias in general (Dementia Type Alzheimer, Vascular Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment, etc).
Psychogeriatrics is a specialty of Health Sciences and Medicine recognized as such in countries such as the Netherlands, Canada and the United Kingdom, so that Costa Rica can not be left behind nor pretend that the elderly are not different from the Younger people in terms of the challenges of aging for both the body and the mental and social state of the human being.

Its mission is to differentiate the Older Adults as a biologically, psychologically and socially different population with special needs, which deserves a comprehensive approach in multiple areas at the same time; As comorbidities, the use of different drugs and biological insufficiencies are common at this age.
For this reason, current medicine has separated this branch by trying to make an impact on the lives of the elderly, realizing that in these ages, every small detail about the physical and mental health of individuals should be taken into account, If it is expected to be a source of health and not worsening the disease.

The medicine of younger people often takes for granted the functionality of organs and cognitive abilities, thus exposing patients to multiple treatments and pharmacological interactions without taking into account the consequences that it discards beforehand.

Older people are people with special needs that need to be focused from the first assessment and thereafter. They can not be worked as organs, nor as apparatuses separated from a whole. As a minimum, the Psychogeriatric Assessment examines 5 areas of the user, mental and cognitive status, emotional state, social support, functional capacity and biological processes. And it is assumed that the modification in one of these areas will definitely influence the others for better or for worse.

In addition, within the approach, it considers it imminent to respect the patient's autonomy and independence within the realness of his abilities.
Psychogeriatrics is a success of our times and an inexhaustible source of knowledge available mainly to the elderly and their family.
